Macht total viel Sinn. Sonst ist das Timing im Argen, weil möglicherweise nicht immer gleich viel Luft in den Leitungen ist oder sowas... "Totvolumen" stört extrem.

Do you not miss a ramp up and a ramp down of the flow? The stepped profile seems so un-natural to me. Infusion and extraction are both continuous processes.

For PI: For a very light roast you will usually use a very fine grind. To be able to infuse the coffee puck with water you will choose DFR2 for this, but with DFR2 the whole pre-infusion will be long. I can think that after initial infusion, you would like to ramp up the flow, so pressure will rise faster and the puck will be saturated in less time. Of course you can choose a higher DFR after only a couple of seconds of DFR2, but the sudden higher flow doesnt correspond with the state of the puck, it will not be completely saturated at that moment.

During extraction: As solvable and unsolvable solids start being extracted from the coffee puck, resistance of the puck will decrease. A machine with fixed pressure will cause blonding as pressure will get too high for the resistance of the puck. The Mina is flow controlled, so during extraction the pressure will decrease as a result of the decreasing resistance of the puck and constant flow. So blonding will be much later than with fixed pressure. But how nice would it be if you could also have a constant decreasing flow? You will be able to manipulate the pressure on the resistance-loosing puck and you could delay blonding even more....

    Best, Niels

@NelisB : Thats exactly what I do for light roasts and this is probably the closest you can geet to a Slayer Shot. When I dial in a light roast, I normaly grind 2-3 steps finer on my HG1 and go to the manual mode of the Mina. I use DFR2 for preinfusion until a pressure of 4bar is reached. After that I go to DFR 6 for a very short time of 1.5-3 seconds to compress the puck. After the compression I go back to DFR2 or DFR4. This ramps down the pressure at the end and lets the shot blond later. If the shot flows too fast after the long preinfusion, I grind even finder until I get a shot time excluding preinfusion of 26-28 seconds.

The flow isn't constant during extraction. The Mina isn't flow controlled in the narrower sense, like the Decent. Means the Mina doesn't take any action to maintain the flow at the same rate. As long as you don't change the DFR by yourself or pre-programmed it acts like a normal machine with a flow restrictor in the group head. The "only" difference is, that you are able to change that flow restrictor on the fly.

So if you don't decrease the DFR at the end of the shot, the machine does the same thing others do. Restriction of the puck goes down, means the brew pressure decreases and flow increases. Other machines show you the pump pressure at the gauge, which stays constant
at 9 Bar, but brew pressure doesn't.

Do you agree that ramping up or down during an adjustable time interval can give you more possibilities to match the profile with your coffee? I don't see how the coffee puck needs a sudden change of flow. Both infusion and extraction are continuous processes, not stepped. The need to change flow (and pressure) are the consequence of the continuous changing status of the coffee puck. I don't understand how a stepped profile can follow the continuous changing status of the puck.

I doubt, that a continuous flow variation has much effect. If flow is limited by the puck, pressure rises. So if you open your valve, the flow does not follow the opening proportional, but is limited by the equilibrum of puck resistance and static pressure. So I see no problem in a stepped aproach regarding flow regulation.

Think of it as valve regulation. The surface of the opening of the valve is regulated, not the flow.

Of cause it wold be nice. But not more.

Besides stepped approaches make things easier in terms of repeatability. I'd always go that way unless there is a big reason not to. Which I can't see right now..
