    1) a standard "snap ring pliers" (there are zillions of brands and styles)
    Unknown.jpeg

    2) Piston unscrews counterclockwise (looking at the bottom end of the piston)

    3) never use a chisel to remove a bronze piston, that's barbarous, it will only scar it, use a proper ring wrench, perhaps visit a bicycle shop.

Ah my bad. The chisel was for shocking purposes to see if the threads could be shaken loose. I used a c-spanner wrench like you noted for the actual work of trying to unscrew the piston. The one I am using is shown with this different group head.

Ok so I am not crazy in that I need snap ring pliers. The pair I have are losing the battle against the rings so I need to clean up the grease/nicotine first to get them loose.

I disassemble the piston yet. It works without any problems. If I see the one on the pictures I should do so?

der innen Zustand der Hebelgruppe hat mir nun doch keine Ruhe gelassen.
Ich habe Glück gehabt, perfekt:) Ein wenig gereinigt, OKS 1110 Fett auf die Dichtungen, fertig.

I use two different greases. Dow 111 molykote is for most uses when there is contact with water in my machine or Loxeal-4. I use two types as my Bosco's bore has such tight tolerances that my Dow 111 becomes ineffective in about 6-8 weeks of use. Loxeal-4 is the grease the Bosco workshop applies on their machines and works for tighter spaces between the seal and bore. The original application lasted 1,5 years before I need to replace the grease.

@IamOiman: After you acquire a proper snap ring pliers you should invest in a C-clamp. Your picture with the nylon ties securing the piston spring

    92111-503e803a1ec67138d79fd106e8e505b3.jpg

is extremely dangerous and well, sorry to say, unprofessional. I've seen nylon ties used on other forums and while the word "resourceful" comes to mind and is the most charitable, so does "lunacy". See @Jupe3.0 in the Velox termo thread for the way it should be done. I've also seen on some of the coffee forums the most primitive spring compressors made of wood and 4 threaded rods, like torture instruments from the Inquisition. Unnecessary. A C-clamp with the proper fittings is not that expensive and it is the skilled way for one-man spring removal. I mentioned in the Velox thread: if you just want to service the top end, removing the shower screen, pulling the handle down slightly, then mounting an empty portafilter with a wood dowel in it, then slowly releasing the handle, does the trick.

    (compliments to @Jupe3.0)

The security rings were buggered but I got them off. I will replace them with some spares I have.

@chanik you are correct that zip ties really are not the best solution, but the real reason I continue to hold off creating my own c-clamp is I do not expect to repeat the service of decompressing and disassembling the upper group at the time. It appears though that I do not intend to stop acquiring machines so I agree that I should invest in a c-clamp. The other reason is I have no welding skills whatsover so I would need to learn first how to weld.

Are you referring to this torture instrument ;)? I made it as it was very easily to acquire and fabricate without welding skills and now have a group in pieces.

    @IamOiman:

Missed that one but yes. I mentioned previously "C-clamp" but "F-clamp" is actually what I meant. No need to learn welding, but it's true that a welding shop commonly uses them. Here is one of the many on the market, it conveniently "slips" to the desired size. Again, you need to add the appropriate pads/fittings (alla @Jupe3.0) on each side for security.

@chanik: Please note that the tool from Jupe is not a normal F-clamp. Jupe uses this commercial tool, especially designed for the old Faema groups with a pin on the upper side. A normal screw clamp could also be potentially dangerous because one can not always securely attach it to the top of the group. So in my opinion it is better to build a wooden compression tool than to use a regular screw clamp.

Hat jemand eine Idee wo es die große Flachdichtung zwischen Hebelgruppe und Kesselübergang für die Mercurio bzw. Urania gibt? Selber passend schneiden?
Die Lambro-Dichtungen sehen ja anders aus.

I looked at this one when researching group to boiler gaskets. I found out that the Gaggia Lever group would fit my group if not for my thermosyphon fittings, which are sold standard in Teflon. The Zodiac gasket is indeed different due to the thermosyphon fittings needing space to fit, and thus the gasket is U-shaped. In fact my Mercurio does not have a gasket from the group to boiler and as a result it bolts directly onto the frame because of its thermosyphon fittings. I cannot confirm if the Gaggia group gasket will fit the V-group you have but you can certaintly try.
