Purer Unsinn.

hi denis, this is an extremely nice offer. i assume u don't mean me in particular, but i can just answer on my behalf : ) i will see how things develop. my ek at home will only see me walking on eggshells and wearing silk gloves from now on. chances are, i won't touch it at all anymore and just buy me a niche :D:rolleyes:
but if there will be suffering at work i might come back to your offer!

....ah...but @Denis : by the way: i heard of a hack where you put a paper snippet somewhere under (?) a screw of the case....i don't know...i think you know what i mean. could you elaborate on this? if you prefer PM....

Yes. If everything is perfect (and it will never be) then putting the grinder together, after measuring everything will result in a super aligned EK. This wil not happen 99% of the time, because the grinder is made out of many pieces, and the tolerances add up, and then it comes into play the human error, how good you center the dial knob lid when you put it over the shear plate, how you tighten the two front screws without off centering the dial knob lid and so on. In the end, if someone tells me he has an aligned EK by just checking with the dial, i just laugh in his face now, because I know its not aligned.

You unscrew the small pins with the imbus at the dial knob. With the grinder turned off with a flat screwdriver and two fingers you rotate and lock the burrs. Now with the burrs locked in place (touching but not moving) put the dial knob to show zero here. Screw the two little screws on the dial knob side and put the grinder to extra coarse.

Turn on the grinder, and slowly go to fine, you will hear the burrs touching between 0 and 2 on the dial.

If your burrs touch now at 1 lets say (on the new dials) one unit will be 3.88microns, so touching at 1 means 10 units *3,88 microns= 0.038 microns alignment between static and running. This is a medium to bad alignment. A good alignment on Ek will be around 0.5 (5 microns units*3.88 microns= 19,4 microns dynamic alignment, while running and grinding the beans).

Now, because the parts have tolerances, some are better made than others, (for example the hole on the carrier an be slightly off center by 0.01mm, or the shaft has a play of 0.02mm, this all adds up in the alignment. You will never have a aligned grinder if the burrs are showing 0,00mm on the burrs or at the housing, with the grinder disassembled.

The dial knob cap/lid is the one pressing more or less on the carrier back plate at a slight angle. The spindle and bearing inside the dial knob cap has a small play, and it should take the angle of the slightly tilted carrier, but most of the time the grinder will be noisy when it does this and the bearings will go bad in time. To align it, you tighten or loose a bit one screw (pick left or right) with the grinder running, and see if your zero went down or up (the zero where you had it taken with he burrs locked).

You will know what side needs to be lower or higher, so adding a small paper shim or aluminium foil at one side (exactly at the screw under the cap) will make the lid press the carrier at a small angle, and this will result in better parallelism between the burrs while running.

    Example:
You took the zero with the locked burrs, and your grinder makes noise at 1 on dial (0,038mm difference). Put the grinder coarser (2-3+) and slowly loose one side screw, then go back to check the point close to 1 see if the burrs touch at 1.5 or at 0.8.

If they touch at 1.5 the parallelism is worst than before (15*3,88= 58,2 microns) if they touch at 0,8 (8*3,88=31 microns).

    Bad values 35-50 microns
Medium values (decent alignment) - 25-35 microns
God tier alignment = 12-18 microns.

You will never be able to align it better than 12 microns, not with new shaft, new bearings, new parts, it's just pointless from that point down, because of the construction. If you dont understand something, please ask. The idea is that you imply a small angle at the lid, that will be transmitted into the carrier angle into the shaft (small) and that will be magnified towards the edge of the burrs, where the burrs touch (the ek burrs dont touch exactly at the edge, but more around 80mm diameter, not at 98mm).

Another must for this grinder to work is, to have the shear plate minimum 1mm bellow the carriers face, or else it will scratch and push into the dial knob spindle and vibrate while running. If you have problem with shear plate staying in place, do it like me, use super glue and glue it to the carrier, insert it to max and make sure it's centered.

I spend to much time with this grinder, you can wake me up at 3 am and with my eyes closed I can disassembled it into pieces, put everything together and align it. It's a love, hate relation, and already just by hearing the sound while running (without touching the burrs) I can tell you if the grinder is aligned or not.

    thx a lot!!!!!!!!
i think i understand what you mean.
i will try that. i had this observation too, that the angle of the front plate and the angle caused by improper/uncautious fixation of the screws of the dial knob and resulting skewness of the lid change the result quite observable. but i did not put the energy in it since i am a very, very poor mechanic.
the ek is a system, as you say. of course this is true for almost everything but the ocd-ness you need with this grinder in all parts can‘t be emphasized enough.
    thx for your explanation.

It should make no noise, or change in sound when running or when you use the dial knob to regulate the grinding degree.
When the shear plate is touching you hear a small metalic noise, from time to time, specially when you turn on the grinder, because it's centering after.

I hope I captioned the full sound of the grinder here, as you can hear, is pretty quiet for an EK, no strange sounds, the engine sound doesnt change in tonality while I use the dial knob, meaning the bearings are centered and the grinder is aligned, no vibrations more than the standard ones:

@clucle I think I already explained to you on Instagram, that between the burrs there are coffee fragments, and when you go with the burrs closer together, what you hear is the noise from those between the burrs. The sound of the burrs when touching is more metalic than what you describe as brrr.

The coffee particles are pushed and crushed by the burrs, and once you go to fine one time and try to go again to coarse and fine the sound will not be there anymore, because you crushed and cleaned all the small particles between the burrs. This is normal and the sound is present on Ultra too.

Yep, I know that noise, but there is another deeper one which is constant and independent from the dial or so. Maybe I can catch it in a video.

Then, there is something wrong with your grinder.

As for example, if the shaft is not straight, or if the bearings are not into placed pushed all the way, then your burrs can touch while you rotate, and you have that noise, or I dont know, but what you describe is not normal.
