Just some information for you guys...sorry it's in English. On my home forum where a few people are very "questioning" of the Niche, much was made of grinding in 3rds with single dosing grinders, although no one bothers doing it with the expensive single dosers. I did extend a test almost 1 year ago where all my coffee was made feeding a few beans at a time into the Niche. I also have done the following test with and without the disk. Below is my forum post. The "challenge" is in Italics, my test which is more reasonable to do is below in blue. You can try this test yourself with and without the disk. When the disk is removed those timings became around 54 seconds and 33 seconds with the grinder set to the same grind fineness. These tests are why I called it a flow control disk and why it reduces grind variance from fine to coarse as the cones empty!

I hope you find it of interest and try the same tests with your home made disks or the Niche one when available in the new year. No one on my home forum tried this with the more expensive single dosers, or other grinders and the thread went quiet.

I didn't notice this post, admittedly I had stopped following the thread for a while. When testing I could see the power was constant, but I didn't just rely on that, I confirmed my belief that this should reduce the distribution width caused by changing weight /amount of beans

So weeks ago I tried something similar...as you can appreciate 3rds is tricky and it's also more time consuming but I did halves which are as significant when judging whether the NFC Disk was working. I didn't put the results in the mini write up on the review site because it was a bit geeky and I don't know how much value the normal reader would have got.

    Method

17g coffee. I split the grind output between 2 containers and ground for 8.5 seconds before swapping (this might vary a tad depending on mains voltage and speed of the Niche), then swapped the grind cup for a small plastic tray and ground the remaining half, the grinder was constantly running and not stopped for the test. I repeated this so I had 2 splits, the first and second half of each grind.

This gave equal doses of approximately 17g (within 0.3 of a gram). I repeated this process 4 times to have 4 tests. Rather than post an average which can be misleading. I will post 1 set of results, the rest were very similar, to within a second or within 1g of extracted espresso weight. It's tricky to get the extracted espresso weight right on the button, as my scales have a slight delay.

33.4 coffee out, shot timer 26.8s..........1st half (17g coffee)
32.6g coffee out shot timer 27.4s..........2nd half (17g coffee)

    17g coffee. 2 grinds 50/50 split.

Machine used Minima, constant pressure set to 9 bar....no profiling used, extraction temperature 93C

The taste of the coffee was the same (to me) in each case. People are welcome to try this and confirm what I found. I'm not going to bother with 3rds because it's super tricky and 50/50 splits do show if there is a significant difference and would have seen much more variance. So the device is working as it should. In fact it would be tricky on other grinders, simply because of retained grinds, fortunately that's not really a problem with the Niche.

When I do reviewing and testing I actually do quite a lot more testing that I ever bother publishing e.g. the temperature testing on dual boiler machines and PID setup is very time consuming and boring. It's mainly because the audience it's aimed at usually doesn't have much experience or interest in the nitty gritty,

    Thanks for sharing DavecUK.
To be honest, to follow such test procedure as described with and without disk through several rounds seems to be quite time consuming. Apart from the fact that you might get a serious caffeine flash from all tasting... That might be the main reason why not so many followers were repeating the proposed measuring scheme. As I'm sure the differences might be neglectable and in a home environment it would be hardly possible to have all other conditions unchanged - I refrain from executing such test too.

Though, what I'm really interested in is your conclusion. The usage of a flow control device (of any kind?) would reduce the grind variance noticeably. Thus, leading to better extraction results. Is it correct to sum it up that way?
And the popcorning would only be relevant to the extend in which it prevents beans from being consistently fed to the burrs?

Without going through a scientific series of tests, my personal summary would be that my current 3D printed flow device is not the ultimate solution yet (similar to the Eureka disk). Beans are still being kicked out from the burrs and even have to be manually re-fed. Which spoils the intended purpose. Alternative options that I could come up with (without thinking it through thoroughly) would be a smaller and steeper inner feeding cone and some weighted cover/ lid which is preventing the extensive bean movement while providing constant downwards pressure.
In any case, I'm aware that we are talking about a lot of effort to achieve minor improvements as the grinding results are remarkable good out of the box.

Would be nice if you could keep us updated on the development though.
    Thanks.

    Hi @DavecUK

    thanks for sharing Your findings.

My issue with the grinder is less the existance of popcorning and possible sideeffects, but more bean fragments jumping out of the hopper against the lid and landing on the scale for grind size.

After using my own design (a kind of conveyor screw) for a while, which is working reasonably well in preventing this "problem", realy a minor one,
I now brazenly copied the design of Yours @khellmahh posted

    here

to give it a try on my grinder.
just quick and dirty constructed and printed in TPU 95, cause I had it on Hand.
The result, no chipping on the scale and no last bean that is spinning circles on the milling cone ( which sometimes happened with bigger beans) can be seen here:

    Greetings

    So isses:D.
